The knurl, the crosshatch pattern etched into the barbell shaft is the sole point of physical contact between the athlete and the load. If the grip fails, the lift fails. But more importantly, if the knurling is poorly manufactured, it actively damages the athlete's hands, leading to torn calluses, missed training days, and an over-reliance on lifting straps.
